The Suzuki Method - Available for Piano, Strings, Guitar, Flute and Recorder

The Suzuki method teaches the student to play an instrument by ear in the beginning, bringing in the note reading as soon as the student is ready. Depending on the student, with our special "Prestige Suzuki" method, the note reading is introduced anywhere from 3-12 months into lessons. We do not delay for years as some Suzuki teachers may do. The Suzuki method is also referred to as the "mother tongue method," as a young child has learned everything by ear until he or she is reading well, and the Suzuki method teaches the instrument in that same "mother tongue" (by ear). Children ages 3-8yo should enroll in this method; however, students of any age are welcome to enroll in the Suzuki method rather than a traditional method. Students play wonderful repertoire very early on, because they are not confined to only being able to play what they can read. Furthermore, students can focus on technique and making beautiful music right from the start, allowing a student to enjoy making music more! We also offer a Suzuki group class*.

Lesson Lengths

We suggest the following lessons lengths based on age. We will gladly be flexible for students with learning disabilities, those who are more advanced, or adults who cannot keep a regular schedule.

AGE TIMES/WEEK LENGTH
3-5yo 2x/week suggested, 1x/week required 30-minutes each
6-8yo 1x/week 30-minutes each
9-12yo 1x/week 45-minutes each
13-18yo 1x/week 60-minutes each
Adults/seniors flexible scheduling available 30-, 45-, 60- or 90-minutes each
Advanced 1x or more/week 60- or 90-minutes each
Disabilities 1x or more/week flexible (usually 30-minutes min.)

Children Ages 3-6

Younger children have many options available. This is the best time to begin music study to reap the benefits of music lessons such as improved reading ability, better math scores, comprehension, spatial reasoning, and other important aspects. Psychological studies show it is best to begin an instrument before age 7 to experience the educational benefits of music study.

Children in this age range may need 2 lessons each week due to retention issues. Not all young children will be able to retain information for 7 days in a once weekly lesson, so having a lesson twice each week increases the retention and rate of progress. While 1 lesson per week is required, 2 is optional.

The lesson length will always be 30-minutes each at this age, unless a child has begun lessons close to age 3 and has had a few years of lessons, therefore needing the longer lesson (45-minutes) due to advancement. While this may seem like a lengthy amount of time, the teachers are trained to use various activities to have the lesson move quickly and keep the attention of the child. Should it ever be a problem, though, just call us and we will gladly work with you and with your teacher to change the format of the lesson.

We offer a variety of options for children ages 3-6:

     Piano lessons (3yo+)

     Violin lessons (3yo+)

     Piano Exploration Class (3-10yo)

     Violin Exploration Class (3-10yo)

     Guitar Exploration Class (5-10yo)

     Summer Camps (3yo+)

     Kids Off Broadway Workshop (6-18yo)

If you would like to further discuss the options for your 3-6yo child, please feel free to contact us!

Adults & Seniors

Students of all ages can learn a musical instrument. Even if you have not had any musical study, adults and seniors can learn an instrument, even from scratch! The learning process may be a bit slower depending on your eye-hand coordination, but the teacher will be patient and work at your pace.

Seniors over the age of 60 will receive a 5% discount off their monthly invoice.

Adults and seniors are welcome to study any musical instrument. We frequently suggest piano lessons, particularly due to the recreational possibilities of helping your children and grandchildren learn, playing carols during the holidays, and many other possibilities. However, you are invited to select any instrument that is of interest to you. In addition, adults and seniors may choose either the Suzuki or traditional method.

If you have arthritis or any other condition or disability, please speak with us in advance. We will gladly assist you in selecting an instrument that will be best for you and at which you can be successful.

Suggested Supplies for Music Lessons

Music Stand: While we have stands you may use at the studio, you will need something to rest your music on when practicing at home. Not having the music at the right height will affect your ability to properly play the instrument. For voice, string, guitar, brass, woodwind, or percussion lessons, you need a music stand.

Metronome: This is never the favorite tool of any musician, but it is important to have, especially as a student progresses. A metronome will teach a student to play at an even tempo. Credit card size metronomes are available and are easy to transport. Your teacher can show you how to use your metronome.

An Assignment Book: Having random pages with assignments on them that never make it back to the lesson is not a good way to keep track of progress. We have assignment books that we believe are your best options for less than $10, and your teacher can help you select those. We prefer that you not bring a spiral notebook from the store because it can scratch your instrument or our instruments easily. The assignment books are a wonderful way to track progress so that you can look back and see what has been accomplished, and you can record practicing time.

A Good Place to Practice: A quiet, well-lit, comfortable practicing place is best, where the student can have proper posture. If practicing doesn't follow the correct practices, progress will not be made as quickly and lessons will become boring and frustrating.

Rosin, Reeds, Strings, etc.: Each instrument has "extras" that you may need to have. Your instructor will help you with this. All string players need rosin. All reed students will need extra reeds on hand. All string students, including guitar, will need spare strings. Just work with your instructor to find out what is necessary.

Piano Lessons - Available for Ages 3+, Including Adults/Seniors

The piano is a wonderful instrument for any student to begin music lessons. Anyone can learn to play the piano, including students with disabilities. Suzuki Piano is best for children who are not yet reading, but is an option for all students. We also offer traditional piano in which the student learns to read music from the first lesson. Our teachers are able to teach classical and modern (pop/rock) music based on the student's interest. If a young student is not showing a particular interest in an instrument, the piano is a great general instrument on which to begin lessons. Anything learned on the piano can be easily transferred to other instruments. Although we use our core curriculum in lessons, once students can begin to learn supplemental materials teachers will introduce options to keep lessons fun, interesting and motivating for the student!

Adults and seniors will enjoy playing the piano as a recreational activity - it's wonderful for the holidays and with family, and even if you have arthritis or other difficulties with your hands, adaptations can be made.

We strongly encourage that you have an acoustic piano, not a keyboard, in your home; otherwise, the dynamics, touch, feel, pedal and other elements will be so much different that the lessons or performance on a "real" piano will be incredibly difficult. Through our partners, we have rent-to-own programs available so that you do not have to make a large purchase.

We also offer the Piano Exploration Class* for ages 3-10yo.

Voice Lessons - Available for Ages 4+, Including Adults/Seniors

Voice lessons vary depending on the age of the student. We are open to the student studying what he or she is interested in as long as it does not damage the voice.

If a young child does not want to learn an instrument but is interested in music, voice lessons can be a good introduction to general music. For a young child under the age of 8, we will focus primarily on matching pitch and the basics of music using songs that are easy to sing and familiar to the student. For older elementary and middle school students, we begin to bring in more advanced elements of vocal instruction and introduce students to easy musical theatre pieces. High school students can choose to progress to classical music, or study musical theatre, pop/rock, country, blues/jazz, and other styles. Adults and seniors may share their interests with their instructor and we will focus the lessons specifically to the student's desires.

To have in-home music lessons, you must at least have a 3-octave keyboard available in your home.

We also offer The Kids Off Broadway Workshop* for ages 6-18yo.

Acoustic/Electric Guitar - Available for Ages 5+, Including Adults/Seniors

The guitar is available to all students ages 5-adult; however, if a student has dexterity or muscle disabilities in the hands, this can be a difficulty instrument with the motion of pushing in to the fret board with the left hand. Suzuki Guitar (acoustic) is best for children who are not yet reading, but is an option for all students. Although we use our core curriculum in lessons, once students can begin to learn supplemental materials teachers will introduce options to keep lessons fun, interesting and motivating for the student!

Acoustic guitar is usually learned first; however, if a teenager or another student wishes to begin with electric guitar, it is possible. Students will learn to read both music and tablature. Through our partners, we are able to assist you with where to purchase, rent or lease a guitar. The guitar should be an appropriate size for the student, and younger students may prefer nylon strings as brass strings can cut soft finger tips.

We also offer the Guitar Exploration Class* for ages 5-10yo.

String Lessons - Violin Available for Ages 3+, Viola/Cell/String Bass Available for Ages 7+, Including Adults/Seniors

String instruments are more meticulous than other instruments, but if a student is asking to learn to play a string instrument don't let that worry you! Children as young as 3yo may take violin lessons, and the other string instruments may be studied beginning in the mid-elementary ages. As the ear is an incredibly important aspects of any string instruments, we strongly encourage the Suzuki method for all string instruments, but especially for students who are not yet reading.

Students should have an instrument that is the correct size. Through our partners, we are able to assist you with where to purchase, rent or lease a string instrument. The student should go to the store to be measured so that the correct size is chosen. New strings should be put on the instrument and an extra set purchased as strings will inevitably be broken. Violin students should also purchase a "box violin" which is available at most instrument stores for a few dollars. If an older instrument is being used, be sure to have the bow re-haired and the instrument checked for cracks and damage before lessons begin. Rosin should be purchased, and you will want a stand for in-home practicing.

We also offer the Violin Exploration Class* for ages 3-10yo.

Woodwind Lessons - Available for Ages 7+, Including Adults/Seniors

Woodwind lessons are frequently begun in the school's music program; however, students are usually ready to begin a woodwind instrument around age 7. The Suzuki method is available for flute and recorder. However, the students are frequently old enough to begin a traditional, note-reading method if preferred. It is suggested that students learn either the flute, clarinet or recorder first and progress to other instruments such as the oboe, bassoon, or saxophone as desired.

Students should have an instrument that is the correct size and in good condition. Through our partners, we are able to assist you with where to purchase, rent or lease an instrument. We do not repair instruments at the studio but we will gladly help refer you to another store.

Brass Lessons - Available for Ages 7+, Including Adults/Seniors

Brass lessons are frequently begun in the school's music program; however, students are usually ready to begin a brass instrument around age 7. Lessons are traditional, note-reading lessons. Younger students may not be able to play the trombone due to the use of the slide, and breathing capacity should be considered when selecting an instrument.

Students should have an instrument that is the correct size and in good condition. Through our partners, we are able to assist you with where to purchase, rent or lease an instrument. We do not repair instruments at the studio but we will gladly help refer you to another store.

Percussion/Drum Lessons - Available for Ages 6+, Including Adults/Seniors

Students may begin drum lessons around age 6, and frequently a student will begin with a drum pad or snare before progressing, piece by piece, to a full drum kit. The student is required to own the instrument, and if the lessons are scheduled in the studio the student should bring the instrument. General percussion lessons on various orchestral and band percussion instruments are also available.

A student should be tall enough to have his or her center of gravity over the snare, so some younger students may need to begin on another instrument first until the appropriate height is attained.

There is not a fee associated with this class.

Students with Disabilities

Children: Young students with disabilities have many options available. In most cases, music study, or music therapy, is helpful to the child and to the disability. However, it is imperative that we know the details and the nature of the disability before registration so that we can properly match you to an instructor, and keep close tabs on the lesson plan for the child. All of our lessons are already personalized, but we take special care with children with any disability to continue to work with you to obtain and maintain a lesson format that allows the child to succeed. We have worked with and can work with children who have autism, ADD/ADHD, down syndrome, large/fine motor skill delay, speech impediments, and other challenges. Please just contact us in advance and we will gladly speak with you regarding what we can or cannot offer your child.

Adults: Frequently, arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome are issues. If you have had surgery or are receiving medical treatment, you should seek your doctor's advice before beginning any lessons on any instrument as you could potentially do damage. Some doctors believe that moving the hands in piano study is actually beneficial, but you should seek a medical professional's opinion first. On the other hand, if an adult has any of the disabilities listed above under "children," we are also happy to work with you.
